Snowy 2.0 – MAT Portal TBM Cradle Construction
Project Overview
Garry Gillespie Constructions was engaged to construct the first TBM Launch Cradle by Future Generation JV for the Snowy 2.0 Project.
The Challenge
Future Generation JV challenged GGC to investigate opportunities to accelerate program to support the TBM assembly program. The isolated works in regional NSW required detailed logistics and coordination with the onsite project team to deliver the scope of works.
Innovation
To address the program acceleration GGC constructed developed two jigs and proactively prefabricated the reinforcement in a neighbouring laydown area. The detailed lift study and temporary works was approved in collaboration with the project team. This enabled the project team to simultaneously continue project excavation and ground support, and eliminate the reinforcement duration from program critical path.
Execution
Each prefabricated cage (>20t per cage) was quality inspected and then lifted into position with a crawler crane. The ensuing formwork was also prefabbed in our workshop in Tumut, NSW and then transported to site ready to be placed into position.
High Praise
After execution of the reinforcement installation and formwork erection, required inspection and approvals for concrete placement was completed with the project team. An effective pour plan enabled punctual delivery of concrete, testing and finishing of each TBM Cradle section. GGC also provided labour for the construction of the exploratory camp including bringing the camp up to compliance with the bushfire standards.
