AKD Softwoods – Construction and Installation of New Horizontal Shape Saw

Project Overview

Garry Gillespie Constructions was engaged to project manage and construct the infrastructure to house the new Horizontal Shape Saw (HSS).

The Challenge

GGC obtained all the approvals from Snowy Valley Council, building certifications, fire engineering and subcontractor supervision and management. GGC also performed the concrete construction works including the underpinning of footings to the existing buildings, inground services installation, transformer yard construction, acoustic cladding (roof and wall), MCC and control room construction, Saw sharpening and fabrication workshop and mechanical grouting.

Planning

Details planning and communication was required with the combination of types of construction within the live
factory site. Types of construction:

  • FRP Concrete
  • Precast Tilt Panel Installation
  • Services Installation
  • Building Wall and Roof Cladding
  • Structural Steel Erection
  • Cranage and Working at Height
  • Mechanical and Electrical Commissioning

Delivery

The works required co-ordination with stakeholders and booking access. Council planning processes, and all stakeholders have been satisfied that our systems and procedures ensure the highest adherence to all parties’ procedures. The use of our approved and tested supply chain ensured that decisions were timely and effective and planning was centralised, bettering the programme and delivering the project safely and right first time.

High Praise

Good Sub-Contractor management ensuring high quality of work and maintenance of programme. Proactive attitude and management of the works during the design, delivery and risk mitigation measures implemented to avoid project delays. Due diligent delivery of the works in a safe and efficient way while ensuring all assurance requirements are being achieved. Commissioning is currently underway with the first CANT (a log that has been through the first breakdown saw) expected to be put through the saw on 5th March.
